Megaregions vs. Bioregions or wolf in sheep’s skin. I have been aware of the United Nations Agenda 21 program for some time now, but I’ve tried to keep myself blisfully ignorant in the pursuit of building skills and learning to use them in my region. As of June 2012, it will be highly likely that Austin will enter into stage 3 water restrictions, which limits water use so severely that no new landscapes will be allowed to be installed and water usage will be monitored to a highly uncomfortable extent. The implications of this for local trades and businesses are dreadful to consider. While the drought is no doubt the worst we’ve come across in recent times, it raises the question as to what we can do on a grassroots level to preserve not only water, but the trades and practices that revolve around the use of water in order to avoid these restrictions falling into the hands of some Global Megalomaniacal Corporate Megaregion. I feel the need to qualify my aversion to the possible scenarios laid out by Agenda 21, because from a certain angle, it seems necessary, and all things considered, the supposed goals set forth are necessary, but the way in which it will be accomplished is where my alarm goes off. That being said, I am compelled to do some more research and share what I find. To suggest that an encounter could be simultaneously both beneficial and destructive would be to engage in an act of ontological subversion. It would be to open oneself to the influence of the gatekeeper of non-ego centered reality. It would be to overthrow the Ptolemaic model of the solar system. A new reality- based community would discover at its center the paradox of primordial energy.
